News: The New Wonder Woman

The web is apparently blowing up after NBC announced that Friday Night Lights alum Adrianne Palicki has been tapped to be the new Wonder Woman. My first thought was, "huh, really"? On paper, Palicki does seem like the perfect choice, but for some reason this bit of casting is a little underwhelming.

I think part of my hesitation has to do with the fact that I was never a big Tyra fan. Sure, she was more interesting of the female characters, and Palicki's acting chops were better than Minka Kelly's, but she never won me over. I was always more of a Lyla fan, but that's a debate for a different day. On a side note, Minka's casting in Charlie's Angels was equally as insipid.

The fact that David E. Kelley is heading up NBC's Wonder Woman isn't wowing me either. I've never really been a fan of Kelley's work, I never watched Ally McBeal or any of the Practice shows, because his voice never resonated with me as a viewer. Then again, I was still somewhat young when those shows premiered. Now that I'm a little bit older and a little bit wiser, I still don't care about Kelley or his projects.

Also, Wonder Woman is just a tough character to pull off. While she's the most well-known female superheroes everyone has had problems bringing her to life. If Joss Whedon couldn't do the Amazonian princess justice, why are we supposed to trust David E. Kelley.

I guess what it comes down to is I had zero interest in this show before tonight, and Palicki's involvement isn't going to win me over. I'm happy for her, and I hope NBC and Kelley don't blow it. We don't need another Bionic Woman or Lone Star on our hands.

I agree that a David E. Kelly version of Wonder Woman is nothing to get excited about...or really any Wonder Woman actually (unless Joss Whedon's take on it had made it to the screen). But I think Adrienne Palicki is a pretty solid choice. Tyra's character traits made her less than endearing but Palicki's acting chops were solid. And although we didn't get to see much of her in the criminally short lived Lone Star, she showed real promise there as well.

P.S. I hope you mentioned Bionic Woman and Lonestar together b/c of their comparative failure and not their comparative quality ;). Because, while Bionic Woman was a hot mess, Lonestar was a compelling show (well the 2 episode we got to see anyway) that the public simply ignored. Probably b/c of the unpopular subject matter.

Yeah, Adrienne has the chops, but for some reason I cannot see her as anyone but Tyra. Lone Star could've changed my mind, but alas we'll never know.

I didn't pick Bionic Woman (I never actually watched it) and Lone Star based on quality, but because one was a failed reboot and the other was a prematurely cancelled show featuring Adrianne.

Thanks for the comment by the way :)
