Quick Thoughts: COUGAR TOWN, "A Mind With a Heart of Its Own"

This is going to sound crazy, but I watch way too much TV, and I'm thinking about cutting some of my shows. What's going to sound even crazier is the fact that Cougar Town's on the chopping block. I know, right?

To be honest, I haven't been all that impressed with Cougar Town since the latter half of Season 2, and so far Season 3 hasn't started on the strongest footing. Last week's premiere was lackluster, and "A Mind With a Heart of Its Own" was not an improvement. The issues that I had last week are still present. I still cannot stand Jules and her need to please people felt insincere since she spends so much time being selfish and needy, so I was immediately taken out of her storyline, and I HATE the way she treats Grayson. Other things I didn't care about: the entire co-MoH subplot that included the fight between Jules and Ellie, and Laurie's weakest moments of the episode.

Like I mentioned last week, I can be torn when it comes to Laurie because she can be just as grating as the other women, but I enjoy her when she's removed from that circle, so I liked it when she was able to interact with Bobby and Andy. The zip-line between Grayson and Jules' house was one of those silly sight gags that this show does so well, but it was also responsible for some continued growth for Bobby, and I'm also a fan of him and Andy together. When you add Laurie to the mix, everything just works.

I had mixed feelings about the "Grayson needs to shoot a horse" C-plot because it felt like a cheap joke and an excuse to bring Ken Jenkins back. The thing is, I like Chick because he does bring something to the ensemble, and I'd like to see more moments between Grayson and Travis since they're going to be family now, so having the latter be in on the hazing was a nice touch.

After last week, I was on the fence about this show, and while watching this episode I realized that I keep watching it because I feel obligated to. Like I'm supposed to like because that's the cool thing to do, but it's starting to feel like a waste of time because most of the jokes fall flat in my opinion. Plus, I don't see myself ever coming around to liking Jules, so why keep doing this to myself. I'm willing to stick it out for a few more weeks, but CT needs to right the ship and fast.
