Quick Thoughts: THE SING-OFF, Season 2, Episode 3

The first episode of this week's The Sing-Off had some decent performances, but nothing really blew me away. Hour one focused on Rock songs, while the latter half was supposed to be Guilty Pleasure songs.

There really wasn't a clear cut favorite after the Rock portion of the show because for the most part all of the groups started off kind of shaky. If I had to pick a favorite of the bunch, I'd have to go with Jerry Lawson and Talk of the Town's version of The Rolling Stone's "Satisfaction". The performance wasn't anything special, but seeing some old guys bring a Motown vibe to a Rock 'n Roll classic was worth a few smiles. My least favorite act had to be On the Rock's campy take on Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me". The frat boy wannabes just butchered this iconic 80's rock song, and OTR continued to fall down the ladder.

During the Guilty Pleasure hour, some of the groups went for over the top cheese while others really didn't comprehend the concept of "guilty pleasure". After a slow start during their Rock challenge, Committed got back on track with their rendition of The Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way". Again, my least favorite song was On the Rocks' "Kyrie" mostly because I didn't recognize the song and because they really bug me.

Elimination time. When it was all said and done, On the Rocks and Groove for Thought were the last two groups standing, and I was sure On the Rocks was going to be sent home. I had to admit that Groove for Thought was not on point, but they were still better than OTR. Unfortunately, the judges didn't agree and the jazzy swingers from Seattle sang their swan song. I guess Groove's elimination made some sense, but I cannot for the life of me understand how On the Rocks keeps getting passes. Ah well.

Committed and Jerry Lawson and Talk of the Town are still my front runners with Street Corner Symphony nipping at their heels. Episode 3 of The Sing-Off had some fun moments, but was underwhelming as a whole. Hopefully Episode 4 will bring back the talent.
